Established by Walter Whittard in 1886, Whittard of Chelsea stocks almost every blend of tea and coffee imaginable. From the traditional English Breakfast and Earl Gray, to more unusual varieties such as Sticky Toffee, and Apple and Mango, the Company retails 60 different types of tea and 20 varieties of coffee, alongside a large selection of tea and coffee making equipment, ceramics and speciality foods.
Whittard's offering has proved a great hit with consumers and today boasts more than 120 stores across the country, including flagship stores in London's Regents Street and the Kings Road. The Company puts it success down to an
uncompromising attitude towards quality and service. And in order to further enhance the customer experience, Whittard has rolled out a powerful EPoS solution to its estate of stores, including Epson's Intelligent Register (IR) and Win/DSS from JDA Software.
It was vital to Whittard that it implemented a system which was easy-to-use and quick to master for its 500 employees - Epson's touchscreen IR-320 was the answer. Kegan Copas, head of business systems for Whittard explains: "All our staff are individually trained to help guide the customer and make their in-store experience a pleasant one. We wanted a system which could support this process by keeping queues to a minimum, whilst being fast and straightforward to operate."
Having chosen IR-310s as part of its previous EPoS implementation in 1999, Whittard felt, once again, that Epson systems were the natural choice and selected the IR-320 for the new roll-out. "The reliability and performance of Epson's hardware had been proven over the last six years so it was the clear choice for us. We have had exceptional operator feedback on the Intelligent Register - with its intuitive touchscreen technology and built-in printer, we had total confidence in the product," added Kegan.
With a fast Intel processor, enhanced memory capacity and a large, flat touchscreen, Epson's IR-320 holds many benefits for Whittard. Its multimedia capability and on-board sound make it perfect for training, and the Company has also been able to replace its
hardcopy internal newsletter with video clips and commentary, distributed to stores via email and downloaded to the Epson IRs. What's more, being a totally integrated system, it also saves on peripheral costs and makes the most of the space at the counter.
Providing Whittard with a total solution, Epson's IR and JDA software has delivered numerous advantages. "The system has enabled us to streamline our operations and reinforce best business practice. We have real-time access to product, pricing and sales information and as a result we have been able to tighten stock control and improve our buying process," commented Kegan. "Epson's IR enables us to process more transactions faster and, importantly, allow our staff to continue doing what they do best - give great customer service."
