When Jonathan Faull launched Uno, a homeware and giftware shop, he chose Epson's modular MR-800. A year down the line, he's glad he did.
Most would agree that success in retail - as in any business - depends upon a complex mix of factors. And, increasingly, one of the more important of these factors is technology. Today, for any size of company, choosing the right IT solution can make a real difference.
Take, for example, Uno, a Carmarthen-based homeware and giftware shop. Launched less than a year ago, the company now carries some 16,000 items, across approximately six thousand product lines, and its founder, Jonathan Faull, is already planning further outlets. Clearly, Uno looks on the way to success. And, according to Jonathan, at least some of this success can be attributed to technology. More specifically, Epson technology.
Which, of course, begs the question: why Epson? Some of the answer to this lies with Jonathan Faull's background. With many years of senior management in a logistics environment behind him, Jonathan was fully aware of the importance of technology in today's retail environment, and was determined from the start to research the options thoroughly before selecting a system. He also knew the value of working with a supplier able to understand his needs and deliver a system configured precisely to meet them. Which is why he approached Bolton-based Epson VAR, Nisyst, a specialist in touchscreen-based solutions for retail. And it was Nisyst who demonstrated the Epson MR-800, running NPoS, the company's highly flexible core software. Impressed with the system's blend of power, functionality, elegant looks and ease-of-use, Jonathan decided that it was ideal for Uno.
As a result, two networked MR-800s - one on each floor of the Carmarthen store - were installed by Nisyst. Providing full PoS facilities, including credit/debit card transactions, linked to a barcode and scanner system, the Nisyst solution offered everything required by Uno. And the system was immediately put to a stern test: Christmas trading. "We opened in mid-November," commented Jonathan, " and the combination of being a new shop coupled with the Christmas period led to a lot of pressure - both on the tills and the operators. But the system is so fast and simple to use, and so well geared to our needs, that we had no problems at all. In fact, we've had no problems since the system was installed."
So impressed is Jonathan Faull with the Epson solution that it is very much part of his expansion plans. "Although we use the PoS and barcoding elements of the system, as well as some stock interrogation, we're using only a relatively small amount of its capability. As we grow, there will be a need to use much more of its potential, such as stock and warehouse management, and it's then that we'll really benefit from its power and scalability. Having a system which can grow incrementally with you is a major advantage."
