A recent report by 'think tank' the New Economics Foundation (NEF)* has claimed that the UK is becoming a nation of "clone towns" with the same retailers on every High Street. One retail chain determined to change this and offer customers a unique shopping experience and distinctive product range is The Japanese Shop.

With a wide variety of gifts including Kimono robes, sushi sets, jewellery, food and contemporary soft furnishings, The Japanese Shop aims to offer the public a very different retail experience. Creative presentation, an inspired atmosphere and the best levels of service are the Company's top priorities.

Established in 1998, the chain has stores in Harrogate, York and Chester, as well as an increasingly popular eCommerce website. The Company plans to deliver its unique concept to the rest of the UK by opening 30 more stores across country over the next few years. To support this growth strategy, The Japanese Shop realised a need for retail technology in order to provide instant access to vital business information and to ensure fast and efficient customer service.

After evaluating various EPoS solutions, The Japanese Shop decided to invest in sophisticated Application Service Provider (ASP)-based software from specialist Cybertill and thermal printers from Epson. Utilising high-speed internet technology to provide a Virtual Private Network, the system links the point of sale and stock control operations of all three stores with the company's website. Based on a remote server, the Cybertill solution provides instant sales and stock information.

"The system provides greater control over our operation by providing detailed information from inventory to cash flow, in real-time and at the touch of a button," explained Jez Willard, Managing Director. "Plus any software downloads take place automatically and without interruption to service, ensuring our system is as up-to-date as possible and that transactions can continue at all times."

Chosen for their fast printing capabilities and neat appearance, The Japanese Shop has installed Epson's world-renowned TM-T88III receipt printers in-store at the point of sale: "The printers are extremely fast and reliable which only further enhances customer service," said Jez. "They are easy to operate, maintain and virtually noise-free so, very importantly, they do not detract from the store atmosphere in any way." "I am a great believer in creating an exciting shopping environment which stands out in terms of product offer and customer service," concluded Jez. "I have every confidence that our EPoS solution will help us to achieve our goals. We will certainly be extending the system to every new store we open."
