Boasting 24 percent of the UK market, RoadChef strives to challenge the common perception of Motorway Service Areas (MSAs) by offering customers a combination of high quality products and excellent service. Operating 21 sites across the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the latest integrated EPoS technology enables RoadChef to efficiently run the busiest petrol forecourts in Europe.
Founded in 1972, RoadChef's portfolio includes a number of premium sites across Britain - Clacket Lane M25, Strensham M5, Northampton and Watford Gap M1 to name a few. It offers a range of services from its MSAs which include fuel forecourts (such as BP, Esso, Texaco, Total and Shell), retail, catering and accommodation, with brand partners and franchises including Costa, Travel Inn, Pizza Hut and Wimpy.
Committed to providing modern facilities to help journeys become more pleasurable, less stressful and safer, in 2001 RoadChef announced a major £30m refurbishment programme to improve its sites, from total building upgrades to the installation of Costa Coffee outlets. As part of its plan, the Company also invested in a state-of-the-art EPoS and stock control IT system featuring Epson's touchscreen Intelligent Register (IR) terminals in order to maximise efficiency and enhance customer service.
"Our business hinges on uninterrupted service - with 65 million people visiting our sites every year, it's not something we can afford to get wrong. The system we were previously using was totally inadequate and presented a major IT headache. Downtime at our Strensham site was averaging about 86 hours a year - 17 of these in one stretch!" commented Darren Emery, Forecourt Initiatives Manager at Roadchef. "It was vital that the new system could cope with the sales dynamics and demands of our busy MSAs and, with training time at a premium, it was also important that the system was extremely quick and easy to master."
Implemented at the point of sale, the fully-integrated Epson IRs - with their built-in thermal receipt printer and magnetic stripe reader - run Iridium and Prism forecourt management software from Torex Retail to provide functionality such as integrated pump control and integrated EFT. In addition, the system also provides an electronic interface to suppliers, company accounting and admin procedures and has a connection to RoadChef's head office to enable data interrogation for control and audit purposes.
Already extended to RoadChef sites including Clackett Lane M25, Annandale M74, Durham AI(M), Sedgemoor M5 and Pont Abraham M4, Darren Emery considers the EPoS roll-out to be a resounding success, "The new solution has totally
delivered what we required - in fact it's exceeded our highest expectations. We have experienced no failure since installation." He continued, "Epson's IR is remarkable and new members of staff are able to get to grips with its touchscreen operation in no time. Its speed and performance enables us to complete a customer transaction every minute - that's nearly twice as fast as our previous system."
