| For retailers, wireless technology
provides a golden opportunity to break free from the constraints
and the clutter of cables; to work more flexibly and efficiently;
and to enhance their customers' experience. In fact, as Penelope
Ody noted in her article,
wireless technology is becoming "an increasingly essential
component of the in-store tool kit". In response to this
demand, Epson is launching two new products an RF-enabled
printer and a Radio Frequency Interface (RFI) which
will enable users to exploit the potential of wireless within
retail, hospitality and warehousing environments, among others.
Mobile printing
Equipped with a high-speed RFI, the battery-powered TM-P60
thermal
printer brings advanced performance, speed, quiet printing
and reliability into the mobile printing environment. It's
ideal for a wide range of mobile applications and can even
be used in conjunction with a PDA to achieve queue-busting
transactions in retail.
The TM-P60 can produce receipts, tickets and coupons at 70mm/sec,
as well as barcodes, high-resolution graphics and has new
fonts, which maximise the available column capacity. It also
features a drop-in paper roll for easy loading and a unique
partial auto-cutter, which prevents paper jams.
Compact, lightweight and robust with a spill-proof casing,
the printer can be hand-held or mounted on a belt. Unlike
other mobile printers, the TM-P60¹s eight-hour battery
can be recharged internally or externally via a single or
gang charger. This means that the printer can be operated
24/7 with batteries being replaced when necessary, rather
than having to recharge the whole unit and thereby incur downtime.
Designed to meet the latest open standards, the TM-P60 is
compatible with existing PoS technology, eliminating any need
for users to change their system. In addition to its RFI (IEEE
802.11b), it also offers easy integration through an industry
standard serial interface.
RF Interface
The UB-R02 is a universal RF Interface (RFI) which is compatible
with all
current Epson printers, enabling them to operate in wireless
applications. It is suitable for a wide range of applications,
including as part of a food ordering system in hospitality
environments; and to transmit picking lists to the warehouse.
The high-speed (IEEE802.11b) gives the UB-R02 an uninterrupted
range of 100m so retailers have complete flexibility to locate
printers where required.
In line with all Epson products, the UB-R02 is designed to
meet open standards, making it easy to install and configure
with existing hardware. It also conforms to the full range
of industry standard protocols, including IP, TCP and HTTP.
RF card settings can be managed from a web-based interface,
using the IP address of the device within the browser.
