Has the checkout queue past its sell-by date? The days when
shoppers were prepared to waste their valuable time in a lengthy
queue at the checkout have long gone. Today’s retail
experience is all about speed and convenience. In other words,
customers want to pay for goods however, wherever and whenever
they chose. It’s up to the retailer to make it happen.
Now Cash Bases, the point of sale manufacturer, has
developed a truly mobile solution which can help retailers
achieve just that. PowerBase is a range of wireless EPoS workstations,
with their own on-board power supply. This means the unit
is equally at home outside the store entrance, by a promotional
display or even in the car park - with no need for data cabling
or power points - ensuring retailers can react quickly and
efficiently to the movement of customers in the store. The
system can be integrated with the retailer's existing back
office via Radio Frequency (RF) technology, ensuring no valuable
sales or customer data is lost during mobile transactions.
Based on Epson's modular MR-800 terminal, the PB-1000 is
designed for supermarkets and food halls. It is one of two
versions of the PowerBase, both of which can be customised
to accept different EPoS peripherals, including Epson's extensive
TM range of receipt, slip and cheque printers.
The PB-1000 features hygienic wipe-down surfaces; collapsible
side counters which provide space for bag packing and basket
storage; and the capacity to accommodate weighing scales for
transactions involving fresh produce. With its modular design,
and excellent connectivity, Epson's elegant and stylish MR-800
is the perfect partner for the PB-1000. The terminal's ultra-slim
monitor with built-in Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) occupies
minimal space on the unit, while the Intel processing power
and intuitive touchscreen interface ensures transactions can
be processed with optimum speed and efficiency. After all,
queue busting is the object of the exercise.
In fact, the PB-1000 and MR-800 has already proved a successful
combination for Cash Bases, winning the prestigious award
for EPoS innovation at the 2002 Equipmag Exhibition in Paris.
The PowerBase solution now looks set to take the retail sector
by storm, with a number of pilots already well underway in
the UK, France, Spain, Holland and Australia, using a range
of different Epson printers, including the TM-T88III, TM-U950
and the TM-H6000II.
