Epson ventures into Virgin territory

Offering TV, broadband, mobile and fixed line telephony services under one roof, Virgin Media has created a platform for digital success. Operating in 100-plus ‘shops-within-shops’ in Virgin Megastores nationwide, the retailer fulfils the communication and entertainment demands of 10 million consumers.

Following its acquisition of NTL Telewest, Virgin Media has established five stand-alone stores as part of a strategy to create a nationwide chain. This new approach towards growth and distribution prompted the need for a contemporary and functional EPoS system.

After careful evaluation of several options, Virgin Media decided to invest in tailor-made, point-of-service software from specialist Cybertill and thermal printers from Epson. Delivered as an ASP service over a virtual private network, the Cybertill software is Chip & PIN-compliant and easily integrates with the retailer’s Strategix stock management system.

“One of our main business drivers was single reporting that includes our Red Awards scheme. The Cybertill software enables us to log Red Rewards against transactions, and gain real visibility of sales success through a single, easy-to-use reporting tool,” explained Ian Villalard, Operations Manager at Virgin Media.

Inheriting the customer-centric ethos of its former parent, Virgin Media regards active customer analysis and management as critical functions. Putting into practice this philosophy, Virgin Media has installed Epson’s TM-T88IV receipt printers at the point-of-sale to enhance the in-store customer experience. With a 200mm per second print speed, superior graphic capability and increased user memory, the TM-T88IV delivers crisp, clear receipts and helps to minimise transaction times.

Reaping the benefits of the EPoS solution, Virgin Media plans to extend the roll-out to new, upcoming own-fascia stores nationwide. Talking about the advantages of the new solution, Ian said, “With the Cybertill software, not only can we analyse who buys what and when, we can proactively market our services to them and build their loyalty to the Virgin Media brand.”

Colin Egan, Retail Operations Executive at Virgin Media, added, “Epson’s TM-T88IV PoS printers are the ideal choice for our high-volume sales environment. They are fast and easy to use, and produce quality output.”
